Brian's Professional Background

With over 16 years’ experience, Brian has been a Portfolio Manager with Scotia Wealth Management since 2014. For the previous 10 years, Brian ran a successful business self-employed as a Portfolio Manager at an independent firm in the South Surrey/White Rock area. The experience he gained being a business owner helps him to relate to his clients, many of whom are, or have been successful business owners themselves. Brian adheres to a disciplined investment philosophy that is focused on long term performance while managing risk. Through a systematic process, Brian develops appropriate financial strategies that will allow his clients to reach their personal financial goals. As a Portfolio Manager, he manages each client's portfolio based on a detailed Investment Policy Statement that outlines the parameters of the portfolio.

Brian holds the Chartered Investment Manager (CIM) designation from the Canadian Securities Institute and his Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation from the Financial Planning Standards Council. Brian has also completed the Sustainable Investment Professional Certification (SIPC) program offered through the Concordia University Business School. This professional designation is specifically geared towards investment professionals in response to the growing interest in sustainable investment approaches, and provides professionals in the finance, investment and corporate world with a unique set of skills, knowledge and analytical thinking.

Brian also offers EcoPortfolios, a proprietary discretionary portfolio for investors who want to invest in companies striving to be climate leaders by operating in an environmentally responsible manner while also giving shareholders attractive returns. With the EcoPortfolios Pure Green portfolio, you can invest entirely in companies operating in industries which are crucial to long-term environmental sustainability such as water conservation, renewable power, energy efficiency and green building. Brian also offers a Low Carbon investment strategy which avoids companies involved predominantly in fossil fuel and metal or mineral extraction, or companies with large greenhouse gas footprints. This approach can reduce the carbon footprint of your portfolio by 70% or more.

Brian's Personal Background

Brian grew up in Calgary where he swam competitively at a high level for the University of Calgary. While completing his undergraduate degree there, he was the captain of the Men's Varsity Swim Team for three seasons during which the team won the National Championship title. Brian also was the CIAU National Champion in butterfly in 1996. He went on to complete two Ironman triathlons after retiring from swimming. Most recently Brian competed in the 2014 FINA Masters World Championships where he placed eighth in the 100 butterfly.

Brian is raising his family in rural South Langley where the landscape is serene and still looks very similar to what it might have been a generation ago. He is active as a director with the local swim club, as well as with Friends of Hazelmere Campbell Valley. Brian is also a member of many local environmental and naturalist clubs. He hopes to one day establish a farmland and wildlife trust focused on preserving the South Langley rural areas.

In his spare time, Brian loves to spend time horseback riding in Campbell Valley Park, hiking in the Mount Baker Wilderness area or road biking the endless back roads of the Fraser Valley. Creating the perfect food and wine pairing keeps him occupied in his downtime.
